AL East Update- Toronto Blue Jays

AL East

Toronto Blue Jays

5th Starter Mix/ Pitching Update
So the Blue Jays a few weeks ago shut down Ryan Borucki, who you have probably never heard of. He is a valued piece in Toronto's long term plans, he had to MLB appearances last year due to elbow troubles and was expected to be the 5th starter. But at 25 and having had a stellar 2018 campaign which saw him make 17 starts to a 3.87ERA.
BUT the Blue Jays have a TON of money invested in Pitching because the game values that position so heavily- they signed Ryu, Roark, Traded for Chase Anderson, Matt Shoemaker is coming back, they signed Yamaguchi out of Japan who is both an SP/RP, and Trent Thorton.
What all this means to me, is that yes they have depth and they Need the 5th Starter here are some of the candidates for the rotation: Trent Thornton- who is the most likely in my opinion, Shun Yamaguchi- Who should be an RP and will be a long reliever and spot starter. Anthony Ray- in AA/AAA ball last season pitched to sub 3 ERA and looks about ready to make the leap. Jacob Waguespack, I dare you to try and say that- I bet you just did and you're embarrassed reading this now- okay back to him- has a good mix of pitches and had a 63:20 K-BB ratio last year which is great over 78innings at the MLB level. Some AAA guys that look ready: TJ Zeuch, Sean Reid-Foley, Wilmer Font, Yennsy Diaz/ Some 40 man Roster guys to watch Tom Hatch, Hector Perez, Patrick Murphy, Julian MerryWeather- none of these guys have played above AAA yet.

NATE PEARSON- they have said the team is focused on developing this kid which means he will start the year at AAA and will get the first shot in the rotation when needed.

Matt Harvey also tried out for the Jays and was considered to be signed as  RP but was passed on by the Jays, I think the Dark Knights best days are behind him as he searches for this next gig in the twilight of his career.

Hitters
We did see the Jays sign Travis Shaw who should come in and play 1B for the Jays as well as provide depth at 3B and Vlad Jr(3B), were also hoping for a huge bounce back from Shaw as well

Come to find out as well the Jays did also make Mike Moustakas and offer, but obviously, he is in the same situation as Shaw and is a lot cheaper.

The team also selected the Contract of Joe Panik- he looks to be the backup IF for 3B, SS, 2B for the Jays as they push the likes of Bo Bichette, Vald Jr and Biggio for bigger roles.
